The Gods Aren't Angry

Rob Bell has a relatively new DVD out called "The Gods Aren't Angry." At the end of the presentation, he tells a personal story of a time when a friend pulled him aside and said, "You don't have to live like this." The story resonated deep within me, so I decided to basically write a song from the story. Here's the lyrics.

No angry gods we must appease
With empty words or heartless deeds
No sacrifice we need to please
To live in boundless beauty

No ritual, religion game
No closets filled with secret shame
No pointing fingers, casting blame
Or worship filled with duty

You don’t have to live like this
You don’t have to live like this
You don’t have to live like this

No status quo for kingdom come
The invitation to become
Alive and free from soul’s gone numb
Alive in boundless beauty

You don’t have to live like this
You don’t have to live like this
You don’t have to live like this

Freedom calls and freedom cries
Freedom beyond alibis
Freedom dancing in new life

You don’t have to live like this
You don’t have to live like this
You don’t have to live like this

I very much like these lyrics...especially the "freedom from alibis" line.

Hi Ethan. I've come to Miracle Word/Cornerstone a few times now and we haven't yet met, but I was at the service this morning when you sang this song and it was WONDERFUL!!! It ministered to me and I'm sure to many others as well.

I love that you not only heard the Spirit, but were obedient to the Spirit. Your love for Christ really shines forth.

I also am tickled that you mentioned Rob Bell. He's terrific and I love how he walks out this message of following Jesus and helping others.

Thanks again for the song.

Jackie...Thanks so much for the kind words. I was soooo nervous. Actually, I just started recording the song today with Shawn (mutual friend!). Please introduce yourself next time we're together!
